Dear Members and Friends of St. John’s,
On Easter Sunday, for the first time in St. John’s 145 year history, we offered a Contemporary Easter Worship Service to reach a new generation for Christ in Columbus, and it was a smashing success! We thank our new Contemporary Worship Pastor Dan Clark for leading St. John’s new worship band -- with extraordinary performances by lead vocalist Amber Nicole, pianist David Butler, and Walter K. on saxophone, Chris Shaw on acoustic violin, Matt Paetsch on bass guitar, and Aaron Bishara on drums. We also thank our superb sound and AV team led by Greg Bladecki and Shawn Jones. Portions of the contemporary worship service are now posted online at www.stjohnschurchcolumbus.org.
This was in addition to our usual splendid Traditional Easter Worship service, featuring St. John’s Brass, Carillon Bell Choir, and Chancel Choir, under the direction of our Minister of Music May Schwarz (portions of the traditional worship service are available on CD as well). Our Assistant Pastor Rachael Gardner Purdy led our Easter liturgical arts team, our worship liturgists, as well as the Easter breakfast team that brought people from both worship services together to celebrate the resurrection of our church. On Easter Sunday, I preached about “The Greatest Dare of All: Hope,” and St. John’s remains a vibrant testament to that eternal hope.
In addition to our potent Easter worship experiences on Sunday, under the leadership of our Children’s Director Mary Torok, our children packed 100 Blessing Bags during Holy Moly that were blessed during the Easter service to distribute to our homeless and marginally housed neighbors in Columbus. Thank you to all who offered to share Blessing Bags this week, and to our exceptional St. John’s nursery staff!
In addition to our worship teams, our Executive Office Administrator Kelley Daniel, Office Assistants Barbara Mcclure and Janey George, CPD Officer Justin Masters, and Jim Davies all worked tirelessly to keep St. John’s mission and ministry moving forward during this time of extraordinary change and growth. We have a remarkable staff team at St. John’s, and I invite you to take a moment this week to thank our staff for their extraordinary dedication to our church.
This Sunday, April 23, we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter. Like the flowering tree, Easter is meant to be enjoyed for weeks, not just for a weekend. So dare to join us for the season of Eastertide at St. John’s! In the weeks ahead, you will hear more about St. John’s new kickball team (to play at Columbus Commons), our new website, and our professionally designed marketing and advertising campaign.
Our new worship schedule is:
9am Traditional Worship Service
10am Coffee, Connect, and Learn
11am Contemporary Worship Service
With abundant hope for our future,
