Did you miss last Sunday’s extraordinary worship services? We now have TWO SUNDAY worship experiences at St. John’s! We now offer a 9am Traditional Worship and an 11am Contemporary Worship, each featuring a different style of worship music designed to better meet the needs of our changing world.
The 9:00am Traditional Worship Service features our traditional music program led by St. John’s Chancel Choir, under the direction of our Minister of Music, May Schwarz. Come sing your favorite hymns this winter season!
The 11am Contemporary Worship Service features our new contemporary music program, led by Music Pastor Dan Clark and our new Contemporary Worship Band. If you prefer inspirational and eclectic praise music, then this is the service for you!
Both services will remain connected by common liturgical worship themes, as prepared by the Senior Pastor and the worship team. The Senior Pastor will continue to serve as lead preacher at both services, with continued support from our Assistant Pastor, who will also serve at both services. This Sunday, January 15th, we will be remembering our baptisms with The Baptism of Our Lord, from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 3, verses 13-17. Don’t miss this special worship service featuring special music and visual effects as we become made new, once again, in the New Year.
On Sundays, we now offer our new 10am Coffee, Connect, and Learn time featuring Christian education and programming for children, families, and adults, as well as coffee and fellowship in our new Welcome Center that is “under construction.” For children at the 10am hour, our new Children’s Director, Mary Torok is offering Christian education for children of all ages in our new “Holy Moly” program. Nursery care for infants and toddlers will available during both the 9am and the 11am worship services, as well as during the 10am education hour.
And that’s not all! This past Wednesday, we served a hot, home cooked chili meal to about 180 of our homeless and marginally housed neighbors, many of whom wouldn’t have had a hot meal that day were it not for The Largest Table community meal ministry. We had some families with young children this past Wednesday, and one mother especially expressed her thanks for our warm welcome as she proclaimed “I’ll be back next week – see you then!” If you are able to join us mid-week at St. John’s, we offer a Wednesday 12 noon communion service each week, followed by The Largest Table meal.
On Wednesday evening, the Under the Stars Ministry team from our partner churches led by David’s UCC (Canal Winchester) came to serve another hot meal to those who had gathered around the church in need of care and fellowship. New volunteers have signed up to help, as people gather to eat, listen, provide spiritual comfort and sleeping bags, and help others who are lost find a way forward in a harsh world. Finally, on Thursday evening, soul-weary folks found solace in our candle lit Taize worship service. And this doesn’t even mention the daily ministry, justice and advocacy work, and spiritual care of the least, the last, and the lost that our clergy, leadership, and church members offer throughout our community each week.
For example, on January 31, at 6:30pm, St. John’s will host the Maryhaven “One More Chance” Educational session to help families face a loved one’s gambling addition. You may have seen the television commercials that Maryhaven is running to promote the program – but you may not know that St. John’s was one of four churches selected in Columbus to host the program! So please, if you are free, please plan to attend, bring your families and friends, and if possible – help host, provide refreshments, etc. --- so that we might show Columbus the strength of our congregation! To learn more, visit the website at www.maryhaven.com/onemorechance or call 614-324-5425. (MORE INFORMATION IS BELOW).
Each week we make a difference at St. John’s, as we continue to live into our call to be “A Beacon of Hope in the Heart of the City.” There are so many people to thank, so many people who are involved – week after week – in these vital ministries. So to those who have dedicated their spiritual lives to this work – thank you! And to those who are just starting this journey with us – thank you!
With abundant hope for the New Year,
