Dear Members and Friends of St. John’s,
The Ladies of Longford concert held last night kicks off our week long, once a year invitation to donate in St. John’s Annual “Green Wig Sunday” (celebrated on March 18th). This is a once a year special fundraiser for our church Family Fund (Gloria Mock Fund) to benefit our families in need, our home bound and elderly, and those church members who have hit a rough patch in life. Over the years, the Family Fund has helped purchase eyeglasses, hearing aids, dentures, school books and backpacks, gym shoes, food, and other life necessities for our church members.
Due to the increasing needs of some beloved church members and families, our 2018 goal is to raise $5,000 or more to help our church members in need! Please send your check today to the church office at 59 East Mound St. (designate the Family Fund), bring your contribution to church on Sunday, or give online through the church website, www.stjohnschurchcolumbus.org.
If we meet our fundraising goal, ALL of our clergy, staff, and musicians (and a special guest or two!) will wear green wigs(or something similar) to celebrate the generosity of our congregation on the Sunday after St. Patrick’s Day! With two worship services now (9am = traditional; 11am = contemporary), there will be a lot of green wigs in worship on Sunday March 18th! Our kids are also invited to participate, wear green, and join in the celebratory mood on Sunday, March 18th.
THIS SUNDAY, March 11th remember to set your CLOCKS AHEAD ONE HOUR for Daylight Savings Time! We will have lots of coffee and donuts for everyone adjusting to this annual time change -- as well as uplifting music, an engaging message, and a celebration of our New Members joining at the 11am service this week. Please join us, and bring a friend, to welcome our New Members at St. John’s.
Each week, we are finding new ways to invite people to St. John’s. This week, Pastor Dan Clark invited his friend Yuki to film the following video invitation to share with your family and friends on social media. We invite you to warmly welcome Yukithis Sunday when he serves as our guest base guitarist at the 11am worship service:

Another important aspect of our ministry at St. John’s is our outreach to the wider community. Thursday night Pastor Marla Flewellen and I attended the annual Allies for Equality event at the Franklin Park Conservatory hosted by Equality Ohio. www.equalityohio.org. I am privileged to serve as a faith leader on the Education Board of Equality Ohio, and we continued our important work for LGBTQIA equality in Ohio last night. The wider United Church of Christ was also well represented at the event, including Rev. J. Bennett Guess, who now serves as the Executive Director of ACLU, and our friends from PFLAG attended as well.
The remaining weeks of Lent remain full at St. John’s with multiple worship and ministry opportunities available throughout the month of March. Please prayerfully consider where you might volunteer to serve during this Lenten season, and contact Pastor Marla Flewellen to learn more about the opportunities that are available at St. John’s. We look forward to seeing you!
